Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had left her family and she was raised by her mother, grandparents and godparents. As a child Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional-compulsive disorder. Ford started to become attracted to acting when she was a teenager, and she joined the National Youth Theatre. After being admitted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School for only a few days but Ford realized it was not the right location for her. Ford made an application at the Central School of Speech and Drama and finally won an interview on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut in Surgical Spirit in an episode in 1991. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in such TV shows such like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. Her regular work in theatre brought her into The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 season. Tate received recognition for her stand-up comedy that has been added to her resume in 1996.
